Kos

10/15 Kos

We took a ferry from Bodrum to Kos (Turkey to Greece) this morning. Kos is a sleepy little Greek island where everyone seems to know each other-- or at least, is in cahoots to steer tourist traffic to each other's businesses. George, the guy we bought our plane tickets from, sent us to his friend's restaurant for lunch, promising that his friend -- incidentally, also named George -- would give us great service and cheap food. In reality, lunch was neither. George 2 gave us directions to a bike rental shop owned by his friend... you guessed it, George 3.
Besides the harbor being somewhat of a tourist racket run by Georges, Kos was pretty in an unassuming way and people were nice. The island was extremely bike friendly, with a two lane path that circled the coast. We got several recommendations to check out a beach called Tinankapi for a swim, but since i was super impatient, we plunked in the water long before we found Tinakapi. The sea was calm and the waters clear, even 150m offshore. Adam borrowed my goggles after my swim, so I went for a run. Really, there's nothing I like better than salt in my hair, a nice sea breeze, warm water to swim in, and a gorgeous coastline to run. Kos' coastline wasn't gorgeous, but it was undeveloped for long stretches, with no tourists.

After my run, Adam and I got back on our bikes and rode along these windy country roads lined with farmstands selling all the requisite produce for a Greek diet-- tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, melons, olives and grapes. We stopped at one stand and I bought a whole watermelon for us to split by the side of the road. It's a bit past watermelon season so it wasn't sweet the whole way through, but since we were both thirsty and didn't pack water, it was really satisfying.

Rode back towards town and stopped to watch a lovely sunset. The sun was orange and round, and lit up the sky in shades of coral before ducking behind some trees. When we got back, I felt like it was the first time this entire trip that I'd worked up a proper appetite. Absolutely murdered a chicken souvlaki.
